What’s Your Travel Style?

When I first read Lola’s post: Travel Style –  A FriFotos Special Edition, I thought – this is something I could really have a little fun with .  So many options…so hard to choose!  Let’s have a little fun with the theme: Style!

What defines your travel style?  Luxe and glamorous or more of a backpacker with multi-taking fashion? Perhaps a little from column A, a little from column B.

With a love of travel that started at an early age, my travel style has really evolved and transformed over the years.  In the early days, when airline restrictions were not so fierce, I was a dreamer without restrictions!  I packed everything and anything I could possibly need!  My first backpacking trip to Australia, yours truly packed a ball gown!  With visions of going to the Sydney Opera House, dressed as only a movie star would, I packed my beautiful dress, high heels and high hopes.  While the opera never happened, ironically, a blind date to the Navy Ball meant that I still got to wear my dress which was clearly out of place on a backpacking trip.

Functional style on the road...from touring the Amazon to hiking the Camino de Santiago - it's got to be functional.

Functional style on the road…from touring the Amazon to hiking the Camino de Santiago – it’s got to be functional.

I quickly transformed into a more functional fashionista – travel style representing the true adventurous soul that I am, and added cargo pants with zippered legs to the equation.  How else would I trek in Nepal, hike in the Andes and traipse all through South America without functionality.  I would be the one carrying my bag most of the time.  And of course…the winter bucket list from Montreal would not be possible without a stylish winter coat and boots!

Leaving the snow village, Montreal, Quebec

Fast forward to today – my style, more than ever, reflects the needs of the trip I am taking.  I can glam it up for the travels that suggest a more luxurious attire and simplify with high performance fabrics for the treks and sportier travels.  I learned my lesson – a ball gown has no place in my bag if I am spending 2 weeks cycling in Mallorca or walking the Camino de Santiago!  A cocktail dress is perfect for a night on the town or a special occasion.  No one style dominates….it is the travel that dictates style for me now.

Luggage restrictions being what they are, practicalities still do prevail.  Not so much fun when your wardrobe feels a little too monochromatic.  Black pants always make a perfect base…but a girls just gotta have some fun!  A few accessories, sure, but my style really starts to come out with cool jackets, funky heels and a growing purse collection.  Not always practical – but a punch of colour just makes me feel fabulous.  The airline restricted wardrobe gets a jazzy makeover….let’s have a little fun!

Desigual jackets – a splash of colour and a little of the unexpected!

Jackets by Desigual - what's your travel style?

Shoes – I have to admit a little shoe affair!  Can’t show them all, so here is a small collection of my recent and favourite acquisitions!

Style - collection of favourite shoes

Purses – almost a new fetish for me, thanks once again to Desigual for their purse porn!  I can’t walk past a shop without uncontrollably handing over my credit card!

Style - collection of purses to complete the look

What’s your travel style? Sophisticated chic or functional adventurer?  What ever your style – live it! Own it! Work it!  After all, fashion is a statement – it is art that we wear!  Happy Friday.

  1. With all the travelling you do, I wonder how you carry all your equipment and clothes! :O lol

    • I have been known to be a master packer! I also quiver in fear when I get to customs…not because I have any contraband items, as I don’t, but I know those zippers are under a lot of strain and should someone open my bag, I fear my clothes will bounce out of there with the crazy zeal of an overstuffed suitcase! I may need corks for the ends of some of my heels – to save the eyes of the unsuspecting bag opener!!!

  2. Loving your post – learned some new things about your too (i.e. shoes, jackets, purses)! I am certainly a mixed bag when it comes to travel style – I can hit the trail or glam it up. Happy Friday – Happy Weekend:)

    • I think that is the fun of it all….given how much I write about the adventures I get up to (Camino, cycling…) the ball gowns and heels really don’t fit the picture! But, oh how I love getting dressed up. It’s the inner princess in me! May never be fully nomadic, only because of the treasures I keep at home!

      • Love that – inner princess – love your sense of adventure too:) I recently gave up being a home owner and through the process I found that “Home Sweet Home” is anywhere as long as I am with Mr. Craves – do not get me wrong I am not living in a card board box or anything too that extreme – still need my creature comforts!

      • Very cool that you have adopted the full on nomadic life. I think I will always keep a home base…but I see it getting smaller and smaller! Something I could close the door on for extended periods of time…

  3. I love seeing this side of you, it’s normally the functional clothing over the fun because of all the advtentures. I think my travel style is much more fun and trendy than my everyday look. I feel like, when I visit a city where no one knows me, I can be more creative in my outfits, and I pack only my most favourite pieces too. But function does play into it as well. I guess it all depends on where you are traveling too!
Cute little post, and those teal suede peep toe heels are to die for!!

    • Glad you liked the post…I had so much fun writing and photographing for it! So hard to narrow down the shoes – so many cute ones to choose from. The Teal were from my week in San Sebastian, Spain….almost all the shoes have a story! Who needs postcards when shoe shops are so much more fun!

  4. I’m crazy in love with one pair of your shoes – they’re on the right hand side, looks almost like sneakers. I covet these! Source???

    Posted by Vanessa | April 26, 2013, 2:44 pm
    • I knew you would love these Vanessa! They are my highly coveted Desigual sneakers! They should be paying me at this stage….a recent trip away, I unpacked my suitcase into the closet and 95% of my clothes were Desigual! Time to diversify???? Nah…they are too much fun!

  5. I love a brand called wild roses – outdoor clothes with style that can double up for city chic. And I never go up a mountain without my lipgloss : )

    • Very cool….will have to look into their clothes. Always looking for the fun and fashionable for my adventures, especially since they tend to be started or finished in the city! Love the double duty outfit!

  6. over the years, and miles I seem to pack lighter and ilghter each trip! cloths, shoes and bags sacrificed for camera gear, and the possibility (hope) of shopping for something I need, and didn’t plan for, like a trip to the opera house in Paris! Love your blog, your posts are always inspriational.

    • Thanks for the compliment – glad that you find them inspiring!
I know what you are saying…when I walked the Camino, I had no clothes to choose from, and only 2 shoes – hiking boots and sandals. Got to Santiago and first thing I did was go shopping! Shopping spree continued across Spain for the rest of my trip including a suitcase to bring the extras home! I didn’t want to wear my Camino clothes again for a while – some of my friends even burned their stuff at Finisterre! Think I am slowly getting better at combining function and fashion…that’s why I have so much fun with my jackets!
      Happy travels.

  7. Loving the Desigual jackets! I bought a Desigual tank top in Barcelona that I always wear when I am feeling particularly colorful :)

  9. I’m definitely a functional adventurer :)

    Posted by Bashar A. | April 29, 2013, 11:50 am
    • Functional is good! I am totally a functional dresser when adventure is on the cards. Love that functional is becoming more fun as the specialty fabrics have moved away from safari khaki only!

  10. Love the Desigual handbags. And your green heels!

  11. Even though I completely agree with defining your travel style, I can sometimes be a mix of different styles even in a single trip! I wrote up my definitions of different travel styles here – http://glamouroustraveller.com/2013/04/12/the-glamourous-travellers-glossary/
