The Background
Winter is coming, and like many Canadians, thoughts of a Caribbean getaway are dancing through my head! It is time to plan for some serious chillaxin‘ time. Not sure if it will be a return to the Grand Palladium, Montego Bay, Jamaica (where my feet can be seen blissfully swinging in the hammock, as in the photo above) or another island somewhere in the Caribbean. I will have to decide between the all-inclusive or the do-it-yourself holiday. Tough decisions, I know. I am a huge fan of getting out there, exploring what there is to see and do, but I also find at the end of the year I need some serious down time – some bigtime chillaxin’, and the all-inclusive is the way to go. All decisions are easy – Pina Colada or rum punch? Which beach shall I park myself at today? Even the tours are easy – there are plenty of people on hand to help you make the most of your vacation time. I did a fabulous half day at Chukka Adventures riding a horse in the caribbean sea. My time in Montego Bay was nothing short of blissful. I spent the days relaxing at the beach. They had kayaks available for use throughout the day, and the evenings on the deck dancing to the live reggae bands that played every night. While I traveled alone on this one, I met such wonderful people on my trip. Everyone is so friendly in Jamaica.
Getting There
The Grand Palladium is only 25 minutes from the Montego Bay airport. (When doing such a short holiday, I like to spend the maximum amount of time at the resort and the least amount of time on airport transfers, so this was important to me!!!) I booked through Sell Off Vacations for last minute vacation deals.

i lived in Puerto Rico for a year. so, of course, i would recommend it any day! BUT…i also spent 6 months in Barbados. it’s not “Caribbean”…it’s considered part of the “West Indies” – if you liked Jamaica, i’d say you should consider Barbados. it’s much smaller. you could bike it! the people are SO friendly. beaches are beautiful. apart from the “reggae” bumping in the tourist hot spots on the weekends – it’s actually a very calm place. so laid back. and full of culture.
Posted by thatgirlwhit | October 5, 2011, 3:40 pmThanks Whitney. A few people have recommended Barbados to me. It is one of the places on my list! Will have to check it out. Do you recommend any particular part of the island?
Posted by Anita Mac | October 5, 2011, 3:45 pmI lived in Oistins. It’s a small town known for it’s fishing and has a little strip full of huts where locals will cook you up some fresh fried flyin’ fish and macaroni pie and sweet potato pie. At the end of my street was a place that did sail-surfing and things like that. I spent most of my time between Oistins and Bridgetown – in the Christ Church area. The northern tip of the island looks much different than the southern. Up there is where they get good surfing for competitions and the scenery is a bit different. You can easily see it all though…the island is small enough. But i do love the southern coast and small towns.
