Looking for something different to do? Have you tried camel riding? If you are visiting the popular travel and beach destination of Port Macquarie, approximately 4-5 hours north of Sydney, this may be the adventure for you. I eagerly donned the helmet provided by the cameleer (aka: camel guide) and took a ride along the golden sands of Lighthouse Beach. We rocked back and forth on top of the camels while listening to the history of camels in Australia. We were lucky to see dolphins playing in the surf as we cruised the beach. The ride only took 30 minutes, but I still remember the feeling of rocking back and forth as we shuffled along the beach, the guttural sounds of the camels as they folded their legs underneath themselves and lay on the beach, and the giggles from the kids in the group as the camel downed a bottle of water after our ride.
Getting There
Port Macquarie Camel Safari’s are found at the southern end of Lighthouse Beach, south of Port Macquarie’s town centre.
From town centre, follow the coastal road south to Lighthouse Road. Turn right on Matthew Flinder’s Drive. Follow towards southern end of beach. You will find the Camel Safari at the corner before Matthew Flinder’s Drive turns west.
